Our History

How it All Began

Many events have marked the growth of LS Mutual since 1874. The following are the most significant.

1874
On September 29, Father Louis-Zéphirin Moreau founds a fraternal benefit society called L'Union Saint-Joseph de Saint-Hyacinthe with the support of 75 pioneering members.

1898
L'Union Saint-Joseph has 34 branches, 2,600 members and $500,000 in capital.

Vers 1900
The society owns a building on Girouard Street, that is sold to the municipality of Saint-Hyacinthe on October 23, 1922, and later becomes City Hall.

1925
The society celebrates its golden jubilee at the Cathédrale de Saint-Hyacinthe, followed by a banquet for 300 guests.

1937
At the annual convention on November 4, participants move to found a mutual insurance company that will absorb L'Union Saint-Joseph and carry on its mission.

1938
La Survivance is incorporated on April 8. Horace St-Germain, Chairman of L'Union Saint-Joseph, becomes the mutual's first president and Napoléon Laplante, its first manager.

1939
On April 15, the mutual insurance company submits its first annual report as at December 31, 1938. Assets stand at $633,975 and in-force business totals close to $2.1 million.

1946
On December 31, Louis-A. Beauregard replaces Horace St-Germain as Company president. Assets top the $1-million mark.

1956
On October 30, attorney L.-Édouard Morier is appointed President of La Survivance. Company assets are now worth $4 million, the surplus $246,000 and in-force business $32 million, representing about 25,000 insured persons.

1959
Lucien Brosseau is named Director General upon the death of Napoléon Laplante, the Company's Managing Director.

1960
On June 14, the building's cornerstone is laid, containing various documents and items: the first certificate of L'Union Saint-Joseph, a policy of La Survivance, that day's edition of the local newspaper, a photograph of the late Napoléon Laplante, a premium rates manual and various coins.

On October 4, Monsignor Arthur Douville, Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, blesses the building, in the presence of Mayor Jacques Lafontaine, as well as the elected representatives for Saint-Hyacinthe, René St-Pierre, and for Bagot, Daniel Johnson.

1961
On September 9, the building is inaugurated by the Premier of Québec, the Honourable Jean Lesage, with a number of dignitaries in attendance.

1964
In-force business reaches $100 million.

The Company now has divisions in seven areas of Québec: Bois-Francs, the Eastern Townships, La Mauricie, Quebec City, Saint-Hyacinthe, Hull and Montreal.

1968
School insurance is introduced. Assets reach $10 million. La Survivance innovates by marketing individual health insurance (AMI), accidental death and dismemberment insurance (DEMAC), and disability insurance in the event of car accidents (SALACAU).

1970
Sales top $1 million for the first time. A registered retirement savings plan (P.E.R.E. Flexible) is introduced the next year.

1976
L.-Édouard Morier, one of the Company's founders in 1938, retires as President, a position he has held since 1956. He is replaced by Lucien Brosseau, Executive Vice-President and General Manager.

1983
Assets reach $51 million and in-force business exceeds the $1-billion mark. The next year, the Company breaks new ground by introducing the flat and level commission system for agent compensation.

1986
La Survivance selects CAPSIL as its advanced administration platform. The Company also announces the expansion of its operations to New Brunswick.

1987
Unveiling of the monument given by La Survivance to the Bishopric of Saint-Hyacinthe in memory of the Blessed Louis-Zéphirin Moreau, founder of L'Union Saint-Joseph, which became La Survivance in 1938.

M. Lucien Brosseau becomes President and Chief Executive Officer.

1988
Celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of La Survivance.

The Company moves to expand its insurance product line by becoming the major shareholder of Les Clairvoyants, Compagnie d’Assurance Générale Inc.

1989
The Company buys Maison Saint-Vincent Ferrier, a former monastery well known in Saint-Hyacinthe, for the purpose of eventually establishing the Company's head office at that location.

La Survivance becomes a 30% partner in Gestion Sodagep Inc., a portfolio administration and management firm.

Along with five other leaders in Québec's group insurance industry, the Company becomes a founding member of the Centre d'Autorisation de Paiement des Services de Santé Inc. (CAPSS).

Consolidated assets exceed $100 million.

1990
La Survivance now has nine regional offices, eight of which are in Québec and one in New Brunswick, as well as 121 representatives.

1994
After 35 years as an executive of La Survivance, Lucien Brosseau, President and Chief Executive Officer as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors, retires.

A new disability insurance product concept is created: the Exclusive Global Insurance Policy (EGIP), which provides insureds with comprehensive, flexible and modular coverage.

Sale of the Company's property and casualty insurance subsidiary, Les Clairvoyants, to La Société Nationale d'Assurance.

1995
Richard Gagnon is appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, replacing the Interim Acting Chairman, Grégoire Girard. Jean Bouchard, already a member of the Board of Directors, is appointed President and Chief Executive Officer.

1996
The Company structure is reorganized and various departments are created. Three new products are launched: SurviToit, SurviPrêt and SélectPlus.

1997
Two new products are launched: AcciPlan and La Fracture. Our sales force increases from 129 to 190 captive agents. Operating systems are transferred to a new technology platform.

1999
In accordance with the new Act respecting the distribution of financial products and services, La Survivance focuses on becoming a "product manufacturer" and radically transforms its distribution methods.

The Company closes its sales offices. Captive agents become independent representatives, and new distribution channels are developed through a network of independent agents and general agencies.

2000
Highest profits in the Company's history, with earnings of $1.5 million. La Survivance adopts a new, more modern visual branding. The Company's first website is launched.

2001
Another record year with $2.2 million in earnings and new product launches.

2003
Richard Gagnon is appointed President and Chief Executive Officer; he replaces Jean Bouchard, who retires after eight years at the helm. Richard Gagnon is already Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Jacques Desmeules, a member of the Board of Directors for eight years and the Board's Deputy Chairman for three years, is appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors. André H. Gagnon, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Rona Inc., replaces him as Deputy Chairman.

For the third consecutive year, La Survivance records outstanding results, generating 13% growth in members' equity.

2004
Launch of Prodige, a new critical illness insurance policy that revolutionizes the market for this type of product.

2005
A 30% increase in sales of individual insurance.
La Survivance acquires 100% of the shares for L’Alternative, compagnie d’assurance sur la vie.

2006
La Survivance earns the highest net profit in its history.
Launch of PAIRE, a new and remarkably successful disability insurance product.

2007
At the general assembly on April 4, La Survivance adopts its new corporate name in English: LS Mutual Life Insurance Company.

2008
The Company implements a major technological development project.

2009
Launch of Assure-Debt, a revolutionary product in creditor insurance.
